Virginia authorities and health professionals are increasingly concerned about how the state’s expanding gaming sector may be affecting residents. The number of gambling options in Virginia has grown significantly, with several new casinos opening and skill-based games now available in an increasing number of convenience stores. Additionally, online gambling apps have surged in popularity, greatly enhancing access to gambling activities.

Carolyn Hawley, from Virginia Commonwealth University, observed patterns indicating what she described as a “sharp increase in problem gambling.” In an interview with Radio IQ, she attributed this surge to the rapid expansion of legal gambling products across the state.

Hawley pointed out that data shows a notable rise in calls to the state’s problem gambling helpline. While this reflects greater awareness and outreach, it also signals a growing number of individuals struggling with gambling addiction. Compounding the issue, many of these callers are underage or young adults, according to Hawley.

Expanding the Problem Gambling Committee Is the Focus of a New Bill

In light of rising problem gambling rates, Virginia lawmakers are proposing an expansion of the state’s problem gambling advisory committee. A new bill introduced by Paul Krizek, a Democrat from Fairfax, would create additional positions on the committee.

As reported by Radio IQ, these new roles would include a recovery specialist and a law enforcement representative. In a public statement, Krizek highlighted that problem gambling is the addiction most strongly associated with suicide.
